Protect Your Home with Wireless Alarms

February 7th, 2010

There’s no surprise with recent statistics that burglars are breaking into homes every twelve seconds to shatter a family’s sense of security and take valuable possessions. Over half of all home break ins are happening in broad daylight. And of course those homes that have no form of home security are three times higher at risk of being targeted by an unwanted intruder. Wireless alarms are something that every homeowner should think about especially because they are affordable. There’s many types of home security, some have wires and are unsightly. There’s no denying that a wireless alarm system is not only aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but makes sense. With technology being as advanced as it is, these home security systems are affordable, very easy to use and they are as reliable as any professionally installed alarm system. So what makes these systems so beneficial? The answer is simple, plugged into the wall throughout the home are battery-operated components. What’s a huge selling feature of a wireless alarm system is that if you move, it goes with you to your new home. The wireless sensors of these systems see and hear everything. Strategically positioned throughout the property and in the home, they will alert the homeowner of any possible security breaches. There are door sensors to help detect when a door opens without your authorization. Window sensors will let you know when a window is being opened or if someone on the outside is tampering with it.There are motion sensors that can detect movement approaching your home, and they detect movement in the home. In addition to all these options, driveway sensors are available to let you know there’s a car or person coming toward the house.Wireless security cameras provide an added sense of protection to any home security system. In addition to giving you warning of a potential threat, it records everything, so if there is an intruder, the information recorded by a camera can be viewed by police and can lead to an arrest. Wireless security cameras can be triggered to start recording by motion sensors or they can operate 24-7. These days, some home systems are so high-tech they come with low-light or infrared capabilities. Some cameras can be situated throughout the property, on porches or doors and of course there are spy cams that can be concealed in the home to monitor nannies, babysitters or even your own teenagers when you’re not home.Home wireless alarms have advanced rapidly in efficiency and have come down a lot in cost. With crime statistics sitting where they are, every home should have a system to protect possessions and especially the safety of the family.

Registry for Microsoft Windows 98

January 25th, 2010

Registry is the name of Windows hierarchical database, that Windows uses to store options and configurations for a Microsoft Operating System.

The registry contains set-up for components of low-level operating systems and the applications based on that platform. Registry is used by device drivers, the kernels, SAM, user interface, services and all the third party software.

To boost computers performance, the registry also gives a method to use counters.

At the time registry was first coupled with Windows 3.1, its main aim was to store information on configuration of components based on COM.

The use of registry was inflated with the launch of Windows 95 and Windows NT so as to organize the surplus of INI files per program, which had been used earlier to amass settings of configuration for Windows programs.

The Windows registry has two essentials: keys and values.

Registry Values refer to the pairs of name/data stored within the keys.

Manipulation of registry values is carried out by the API functions of Windows, which access names of values discretely from their key paths and/or from Windows handle that acknowledges the parent key.

However, the terminology is misguiding to some extent, as values are identical to an associative array, where basic terminology would recognize the values name portion as a “key”.

Window 3s 16-bit registry presents the terms, wherein keys included merely a value that is unnamed (which required to be a string), but they couldnt have arbitrary duo of name/data.

Theres provision for manually editing registry in MS Windows by carrying out the execution of regedt32.exe and regedit.exe in Windows directories.

This advantage could have serious consequences e.g. a slow PC if Registry editing is done carelessly. Thus, Microsoft recommends that before editing the Registry, backups should be performed to avoid damages. In fact, many industry experts like editors and authors of leading trade magazines have recommended this.

Windows 3.x, also known as the “Registration Info Editor” or “Registration Editor”, demonstrated the implementation of current Registry tools.

It was mainly only an applications database that facilitates editing embedded OLE objects.

But the users need to be cautious as the two editors on the aforementioned platforms differ tremendously.

An integrated program of these two distinct programs was firstly seen in Windows XP. The operating system embraced the REGEDIT.EXE interface and infused the REGEDT32.EXE functionality into it.

These editors do not show such differences on Windows XP and newer systems. For instance - REGEDIT.EXE is the more refined and sophisticated editor, while REGEDT32.EXE is only a stub that invokes REGEDIT.EXE.

The Registry Editor enables users to do the following functions easily:

  • Importing and exporting .REG files, exporting data in the binary hive format
  • Creating, manipulating, renaming and deleting registry keys, subkeys, values and value data
  • Setting permissions based on ACLs (Windows NT-based systems only)
  • Loading, manipulating and unloading registry hive format files (Windows NT-based systems only)
  • Remotely editing the registry on another networked computer

Apart from Microsoft, Registry could also be edited in LINUX with the help of open source Offline NT Password & Registry Editor for files’ editing.

Keeping Your Loved Ones Safe & Secure against Accidents

January 22nd, 2010

Do you ever think about whether your house is secure or not? An impregnable alarmed security tool will provide an awesome bulwark against such dangers and call emergency response teams should something happen. Be sure the alarmed protection system you get is one that best fits your house.

You won’t find a special home alarm monitoring tool which is suited to every individual family. The best thing to do is to make a start by calculating what your home’s safety needs are. Do you have a garage connected to your house? Are your appliances using gas? If this is the case, the threat of carbon monoxide poisoning is greater and will be a very high priority when it comes to choosing your alarmed security tool. For older people, or a poorly person there’s always the possibility of an emergency system which can contact help if something terrible happens. Are you fortunate enough to have babies? If so, a security camera system should be perfect for watching the childcare professionals you employ.

alarm systems have many degrees and you must review them when you’re purchasing one. If you want a larger level of security than a regular video surveillance tool can offer you can go up a level to a cloaked security camera system, as nobody will know whether or not there are cameras, they should provide you with much more security. A security system that is nearly unsurmountable is possible if you purchase an industrial-strength monitoring tool which has retina or fingerprint ID panels.

Visual surveillance isn’t the be all and end all of a top-notch alarmed protection monitoring system. The alarm monitoring organization will be notified the moment a burglar breaks into your house if you use movement, vibration, impact and glass smash sensors.

Top-tier home alarm tools should be fitted with distress switches, to keep your worries at bay. Simply activating the switch will send an alarm to help should something threatening happen. Depending on what you were given when you bought the home alarm tool, the monitoring company can then call the emergency services to send assistance, or they will call you to discover what the trouble is. Should you desire more pointers and tips on home safety then look for a good web log on the subject on the Internet. If you study all of the different pros and cons of each home protection monitoring tool then the right alarmed protection monitoring system for your family home will become obvious. This is certainly something you should do if you want protection and will bring you a sense of peace!

Spys in CyberWorld

January 6th, 2010

Did you know your own computer is syping on you? Did you know that every click you make on your windows start menu is logged to a hidden, encrypted database in your computer?

It’s very important that you read a site’s privacy policy to find out what information a web site gathers about you when you visit and how they intend to use it.

People ARE spying on you!! Companies are beginning to check the contents of their employees computers after working hours. Have you been surfing and sending email during working hours? Would your boss approve of this? If not, your job could be in jeopardy.

Think this sounds a bit outrageous?

— July 2000 — FACT: 50 Workers At Dow Chemical Co.’s Headquarters Site In Michigan were fired and another 200 were Disciplined for distributing, downloading or saving pictures that were either pornographic or violent in nature.

FACT: Merck Fired Two Workers And Disciplined Several Dozen Others for what the Company called “Inappropriate Use Of The Internet.”

FACT: Xerox Corporation, Fired 40 workers and The New York Times terminated 23 employees at a Data Processing Center for similar offenses.

— January 5, 2001 — Leading Insurance Company Royal and Sun Alliance sacked 10 people and suspended at least 77 over the distribution of “Lewd” E-mails.

Your computer keeps records of both your online and off-line activities. Everything you do is recorded. If you view web pages, movies or videos, play .wav or .midi files….it is all recorded to your hard drive! Did you know that when you do a search on the internet, this search information is recorded to hidden, encrypted files on your PC? Do you really know what’s been downloaded or hidden on your computer?

Forensic analysis has become technologically superior in finding evidence of all sorts. They can remove your PC’s hard drive and discover things about you that you probably didn’t even know was there. Things you “thought” you deleted. You might think you’ve cleaned out all your sensitive files, but the truth is, many of them are still there.

Peter Constantine of Data Discovery http://www.teleport.com/~peterc/ ) says that “….today’s computers are “grabbing material and tucking it away in little pigeonholes… The user has no idea that the data is out there.”

Digital Intelligence, Inc, http://www.digitalintel.com/freddie.htm ) has developed F.R.E.D.D.I.E. (F)orensic (R)ecovery of (E)vidence (D)evice (I)nterrogation (E)quipment which is portable and can be used in a crime scene (or any other time for that matter) to recover data from a multitude of electronic devices including, hard drives, CD’s, Floppys, Zip drives and tape cartridges.

Skeptical person that I am, I decided to do an experiment to find out exactly HOW MUCH hidden stuff really was on my computer. If you are a Windows 95/98 user, try this experiment yourself.

1. Delete all your files from your Windows 95/98 recycle bin using the standard ‘Empty Recycle Bin’ command. 2. Open your browser and delete the history files and browser cache from your preferences/options menu. 3. Open Windows Explorer and right click on the drive letter you use for your main hard drive. Select “Properties” 4. Write down your drive’s total Capacity, Used Space and Free Space; you’ll need this later. 5. Download the Evidence EliminatorT free trial program from http://www.evidence-eliminator.com/go.shtml?A654789 6. Run the Evidence Eliminator(TM). 7. Repeat step 3 and compare how much free space is now available on your hard drive.

Here’s the results of my experiment:

Total hard drive space 30,677,901,312 bytes (28.5GB)

Available space before Evidence Eliminator: 26,893,676,544 bytes Available space AFTER Evidence Eliminator: 26,620,821,504 bytes

Total reclaimed space: 272,855,040 bytes

To translate, Evidence Eliminator(TM) removed over 260MB of files from my computer! This isn’t much for those of us who have mega-space on our hard drives, but for those with more limited space, 260MB is a lot!

Here’s some astonishing information I discovered about files on my computer:

295 Windows Application logs were found. These logs stored information about what windows programs I’ve been using each day.

There were almost 90 “components” discovered and removed that had “installed themselves” to my computer without my knowledge!

271 Start Menu Recent Documents logs were removed. This held information about what programs I had selected from my Windows Start Menu.

3601 IE cache files were found AFTER I had cleared my IE cache and history!

1960 IE cookies were removed. I had full control over which cookies I kept and which ones I did not.

5636 Windows .TMP files were found that were NOT removed using the browser history delete options. Some of these files are the result of extracting .zip files that were downloaded from the internet, web pages I viewed off-line, .midi and .wav files which downloaded during visits to web pages with background music, etc.

My experiment proved to me that there IS information about me and my computer usage habits that is stored on my computer which takes up valuable space, not to mention information I might not want to ever be public knowledge. It’s always a good idea to keep your computer clean of unwanted files and protect your privacy at the same time.

Are you aware of every single file on your computer? You should be! Protect yourself from Cyber-Spys and regain control of what information is stored on your PC. In this world of high technology, you never can tell when this information could be found and used.

Fire Suppression Equipments Can Spare Lives and Belongings

October 9th, 2009

Emergency or preventive measures in homes and offices are very significant since they can avoid extended devastation to belongings. In addition to the fire suppression technology, it is likewise needful to feature a really solid escape program when fires do occur. All residents need to be informed about the preventive and emergency program once the system is established. Another strategic thing to manage is to educate kids what to do during a fire emergency.

In buildings and offices, Fire Suppression tools are very needed for the security for all engaged. Often in offices, residents may be in a portion of the building where fire alarms may not be instantly hearable. With a dependable fire emergency exit program, injuries and death are significantly reduced.

Another kind of fire sensors homeowners can apply are fire alarms with heat sensing elements which notice heat levels above what is average. In this case, heat sensors will trigger the warning devices if the pre-marked settings are breached. For kitchens, heat settings need to be expanded so as to accommodate extra heat yielded from ovens or burners.

Some care need to be applied to these kind of alarms. As another safety step, fire alarms should make loud noices to inform everyone theres an emergency. The nice thing about it is that it also sends word to people within the neighborhood that a fire is taking place and that they should act appropriately.

Providing a fire prevention technology in your home contributes additional value to it. It imparts serenity of mind and trust as well, especially in homes with little children. For security reasons, schools, nursing centers and hospitals have put up fire suppression devices in their institutions.

Better Safe than Terrible. Install Fire and Smoke Detectors Today

August 4th, 2009

Fire is very destructive. It reasons wounds, property destruction and even death. In the United States, fires are the high reasons of injury at home despite the fact that fires can easily be forestalled. Deaths by fire are normally caused by one thing: victims are unsuspecting that the facility they are in is already on fire.

Fire Suppression Systems are really serviceable and beneficial. It is a warning instrument that when set off, it will beam out a warning to people of the potential of fire. As the scourge of fire is very dangerous. Most of the Fire Suppression Systems accessible in the market nowadays mechanically send word the fire department. This is very beneficial since early fire detection works a critical role in the prevention of deprivation and harm caused by fire.

Fire warning signals are either rooted off manually or by heat sensors or smoke sensors. Fire warning devices are most of the time planted to notice degrees of heat or smoke which normally is an indication of fire. What about those who have hearing disability? Sensible question. Many Fire Suppression Systems employ twinkling or flaunting lights instead of a warning sound or bell. Another early progress is the integration of home protection and fire alarm system, making our houses fully shielded.

Fume sensors, obviously detect the presence of smoke in the air. They detect smoke by either ionization or optical detection. Other smoke sensors also have carbon monoxide sensors which are very helpful in preventing carbon monoxide poisoning. The optical detector employs a light sensor similiar to a laser beam. A series of optical detectors are organized in such a way that the laser beam extends through all of them. In the absence of fume, the beam is not interrupted. however, when smoke is present, the beam is scattered thus disabling it to reach the other sensors. When this occurs, the alarm is activated off.

Ionization sensors, though cheaper, are at present no longer used. This detector uses “Americium-241″, a radioactive element to notice fume particles. Due to its nature and potential harm it can inflict on the environment, this detector is no longer used. The process of smoke sensing lies in its chamber. The chamber permits a even flow of current electrodes, which can be cut off by the presence of fume. This interruption triggers the alarm.

Many Fire Suppression Systems have a sprinkler system that will contain or put off the fire before it gets uncontrollable. However the singular way to prevent fire is to take steps to be sure and take additional preventive measures.

How To Recover Data Or Survive A Hard Disk Disaster

March 18th, 2009

A hard disk drive (HDD, or also hard drive) is a fixed data storage device that stores data on a magnetic surface layered onto hard disk platters. A hard disk uses rigid rotating platters (disks). Each platter has a planar magnetic surface on which digital data may be stored. Information is written to the disk by transmitting an electromagnetic flux through an antenna or read-write head that is very close to a magnetic material, which in turn changes its polarization due to the flux.

The information can be read by a read-write head which senses electrical change as the magnetic fields pass by in close proximity as the platter rotates.

Disk failure occurs when a hard disk drive no longer operates and the information on it can no longer be accessed by the computer.

This can happen for no reason at all or due to an external factor such as exposure to fire or water or High Magneticwaves or suffering a sharp impact How seriously the disk failure is varies.

The most serious and well-known kind is the head crash where the internal read-and-write head of the device touches a platter or a magnetic data storage surface. A head crash normally causes severe data loss and, moreover, data recovery attempts may cause further damage if not done by somebody with specialized knowledge.

There are also controller electronics which occasionally fail. If that happens it may be possible to recover all data.

When your computer’s hard disk starts to act funny, make sure that you have an up-to-date backup. Then you can prepare some simple diagnostics and possibly repairs. Both Windows and Mac OS come with built-in hard-disk utility software that scans your hard disk for errors and attempts to fix them.

This is what you can do for Windows Steps: 1. Double-click on My Computer to open the My Computer window. 2. Select the disk that you want to diagnose and repair. 3. Choose Properties from the File menu. You can see the Properties window for the drive that you selected. 4. Choose the Tools button. 5. Click the Check Now button under Error Checking Status. 6. Choose either “Thorough” or “Scan for and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors.” 7. Click on Start.

Tools to recover data are various such as:

There is a Data Recovery Utility which examines your inaccessible hard drive for damages and corruptions and recovers the data back.

Hard drive can be recovered from Windows 9x / ME / NT / 2000 XP / 2003 disk recovery Supports FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, NTFS5 file system Provides data recovery from Formatted logical drives Recovers data from Re-partitioned & Missing/ Lost Logical drives Lost folder and deleted file recovery.

There is also a partition recovery utility available that helps you in recovering all your important data lost after accidental formatting, virus problems, software malfunction, and file or directory deletion. There are also easy to use FAT & NTFS Partition File recovery Utilities that examine your inaccessible hard drives for damages and corruptions and recover the data.

There are also systems which:

Provide Partition recovery from FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, NTFS5 file systems. Recover deleted files/folders even after recycle bin has been emptied or use of Shift+Del key. File recovery from deleted partition, lost partition missing partition or formatted logical drives. File recovery from Missing or Lost folders. Recognize and preserve long file names when restoring files & folders. Multi-Disk Drive Support - Performs NTFS recovery on all IDE, EIDE and SCSI disk devices.

There is also software that recovers corrupt or lost data from floppy disks.

The software supports inaccessible floppy disk data retrieval, FAT, BOOT or ROOT area damaged situations, and rescues various corrupt files from a diskette. BadCopy Pro can recover data from floppy disks that Microsoft Windows identifies as “not formatted”, “not accessible”, or prompts you to format.

The software does not write data to your floppy disks, but saves the recovered data to a new file that you specify. It can fix corrupted files on floppy disk. It can restore damage to a FAT (File Allocation Table) or BOOT area of the disk. It can repair damage to the ROOT area of the disk, so that files can be listed again. It can erase Viruses on a diskette.

There is also software available that fixes corrupted or damaged Microsoft Word documents.

There is also a new product on the market; software that creates a Windows CD for you, and creates recovery files so you will not need to format to reinstall Windows.

It has been asked many times “I have Windows XP (or ME), how can I install Windows without having to lose all my files. I only have a Recovery Disk”. Well it is really very simple, so long as you have a CD burner; or at least a second hard drive.

Hurricane Preparedness

March 9th, 2009

If you are about to get hit by a Hurricane are you prepared? Do you have enough plywood to board up your windows? Often the local lumber companies will be sold out. In fact if you wait till the last minute Home Depot will be out too. Do you own a portable generator? No? Get one. Do you have enough fuel to keep it powered up? Most generators can use up to 1.5 gallons per hour and thus you need spare fuel tanks as well? If you wait too long the gas stations will be closed and after the Hurricane the power may not be turned back on for up to two-weeks depending on the damage. If you are talking about a direct hit Category III or IV it is entirely possible that it will be at least that long.

So what do you really need? Well you will need water first off. Fill up your bathtubs and any containers you have before the hurricane. Figure about 15 gallons per day per person. You can get by on 6-8 gallons if you have to, but 15 comfortably. Next you need food. Remember with the power out those foods needing refrigeration will spoil in a couple of days, so you need ready to eat type foods. Perhaps freeze, as much of your water as you can, ice is always a premium after a Hurricane.

If you have babies you need to be ready with those special needs and foods. Pets are also serious issues, as they will rely on you for many things, allowing them to go hunt food for themselves could cause serious hygiene issues and bacteria from broken sewer lines and debris floating in the nearby flooded waters.

In case of cuts you will need rubbing alcohol, bandaids and a basic first aid kit. It is also smart to have mosquitoes repellant as the Mosquitoes will multiply fast in the following weeks as stagnant water assists them. Chlorine can also be used to clean water. Rubber Gloves are also a must.

Besides your portable generator you will need some extra Duracell batteries, transistor radio, lighter, extra propane for cooking and a full tank of gasoline in your car. Think on this, better safe than sorry.

Home Security - Protect Yourself Against Burglary

February 19th, 2009

Burglary is a phenomenon: thieves seem to discover each day new ways of violating our homes. There are so many countries where people live each day with the fear that when they come back from work they might find their homes burglarized. Police cannot do much and many burglars go on unpunished. Burglary represents for thieves an easy way to make money. Most of them will not bother to develop scenarios for complicated burglary, unless the target can bring them the “queen’s diamond”. So the burglars look for homes with easy access. Therefore, the best thing you can do to minimize the risk of having your house on the burglars’ list, is to make it difficult to enter. To do this you need to fortify your entrances, secure the windows, employ good lighting and use reliable alarm systems.

Fortify Your Entrance Points

Although they don’t look very pretty and bring a “heavy look”, metal entrance doors transform your home into a difficult target. Most burglars do not possess the skills we see in movies. If a house is too difficult to burglarize, they will simply avoid it. Statistic, housebreakers prefer to enter via the garage door. Followed by the back door, the garage door is known to be the most accessible point of entry in a house. For this reason do not use metal doors solely to fortify your main entrance, but to secure all the other points of entry as well. Remember: a door with a wooden jamb is very easy to kick open. Fortify such entrances and make sure to use quality locks that resist lock-picking attempts for all your doors.

Secure All Accessible Windows

Despite the common belief, burglars are not intimidated by the daylight. Statistic, most of the break-in incidents happen during the daytime, when people are away at work. An open window is an invitation. Do lock your windows when you are away from home. Windows with latches are very easy to slide open, that’s why you should use secondary blocking devices that will discourage burglars. Usually housebreakers prefer ground floor windows and windows that are accessible from a balcony, fence or a stair. When you secure the windows make sure burglars cannot reach and remove the blocking device. If you have an alarm system in your home, connect it to the accessible windows as well.

Use Lighting to Show Signs of Activity at Night

When away from home in a business trip or in vacation, make sure your home will not stay darken night after night. To avoid sending such an invitation to the thieves, use light timers. The light timers can be also used to turn on and off lights, radio and TV sets that will intensify the false impression of occupancy.

Don’t undervalue the importance of exterior lighting. Since burglars do not want to be seen or identified, good exterior lighting will discourage them to come near your home. For this purpose use security lights with infrared motion detectors.

Use Reliable Alarm Systems

Burglars do not want to be caught, that’s why most of them will bypass a home with visible alarm signs. An alarm system is effective and reliable when properly installed and maintained. Take care of your alarm code and don’t write it in visible places. Your purpose is to make it difficult for burglars to break in into your home and not to make their job easy.

Computer Viruses - 4 Easy Ways to Keep Your Computer Free of Computer Infections

February 8th, 2009

Computer viruses normally infect a computer via email. The following are some suggestions to make your computing safer.

  1. The safest way to avoid a computer virus is not to open an attached email file
    - if you do not know what it is, who sent it to you, or you were not expecting
it (even if it is from somebody that you know.) This is especially true if
the file has any of the following extensions: .pif, .vbs, .scr, .exe, since thsee
files are programs that will run on your computer when opened.
  2. Don’t use the preview pane in Outlook. Some viruses can infect a computer just from the preview pane.
  3. When in doubt, contact the sender. Write back to them and ask what is the attachment. If the attachment is valid, they will tell you what it is and what it does.
  4. Delete a suspected message, by holding down the SHIFT key and hit DELETE. This will permanently delete the message. Just hitting the DELETE key (without the SHIFT key) does not remove the message, but simply moves the message to a deleted folder that can be opened.

However, if you just want to skip all the details and stop messing around with preventing computer viruses, just do what I did; download the a trial of anti virus software from a high quality software vendor, run the program and be done with it.

See the download link below for the automatic PC Tools AntiVirus software. I personally use this software to skip all the hazzles with computer viruses.
