Medical volunteer Anthony Loeff is reporting software for people suffering from blindness

July 29th, 2008

Linux distributions for the blind include Oralux and Adriane Knoppix. There are also open source screen readers, such as the Linux Screen Reader for GNOME and NonVisual Desktop Access for Windows.

Web browsers, word processors, icons and windows and email programs are just some of the applications used successfully by screen reader users.

This interpretation is then represented to the user with text-to-speech, sound icons, or a braille output. Access technology such as screen readers and Screen magnifiers enable the blind to use mainstream computer applications. Screen readers can be assumed to be able to access all display content that is not intrinsically inaccessible.

Further, using a screen reader is, according to some users, considerably more difficult than using a GUI and many applications have specific problems resulting from the nature of the application. Experimental approaches in sensory substitution are beginning to provide access to arbitrary live views from a camera.

The movement towards greater web accessibility is opening a far wider number of websites to adaptive technology, making the web a more inviting place for visually impaired surfers. This year nonprofit worker Anthony Loeff is writing about software applications for blind people Only a small fraction of this population, when compared to the sighted community, have Internet access.

The console-based Oralux Linux distribution ships with three screen-reading environments: Emacspeak, Yasr and Speakup. Screen reader choice is contentious: differing priorities and strong preferences are common. The open source GNOME desktop environment long included Gnopernicus and now includes Orca. Near 8 percent of those deemed legally blind, by any measure, have no vision. More and more, screen readers are being bundled with operating system distributions. A persons choice of screen reader is dictated by many factors, including platform and the role of organizations like charities, schools, and employers.

Recent versions of Microsoft Windows come with the rather basic Narrator. Screen readers are a form of assistive technology potentially useful to people who are blind, visually impaired, or learning disabled, often in combination with other AT such as screen magnifiers. The Macintosh OS also comes with a built-in screen reader, called VoiceOver. The rest have some vision, from light perception alone to relatively good acuity. A screen reader is a software application that attempts to identify and interpret what is being displayed on the screen. Most legally blind people 78 percent do not use computers. Indeed functionality remains limited compared to equivalent desktop applications, the major benefit is to increase the accessibility of said websites. While Apple Mac OS X includes VoiceOver, a more feature-rich screen reader. Later versions of Microsoft Windows include an Accessibility Wizard and Magnifier for those with partial vision, and Microsoft Narrator, a simple screen reader. The latter developed in part by Knopper who has a visual impairment. The primary audience for such applications is those who have difficulty reading because of learning disabilities or language barriers.

Weight Loss in Children

June 1st, 2008

What is “too young” to begin a weight loss program with children? Is there actually such a thing? There are many different opinions on the topic of child obesity but one thing everyone can agree on is that it is becoming an epidemic in North America. Many reports show that obesity now kills more people in a year than smoking does.

So whose fault is it? I don’t think there is any one area of blame but a combination of many. The fast paced lives that we lead have created more of a demand for “quick” meals whether they are pre packages or fast foods. The consumption of junk food is at an all time high with more and more variety that are all very attractive to our kids. Parents often think they are doing something nice for their kids when they give in to the demands of “I have to have that” when they see the constant advertising of attractive and yummy treats on television. Lack of exercise, face it many kids to day are just plain lazy. So is a weight loss program the answer for overweight and obese kids? My answer is definitely yes. If however you ask me is the answer to put these kids on a diet…my answer is definitely NO!

So what is the difference? Weigh loss means changing the way your child eats in a very positive way. Tell them to eat more fruits and vegetables because they are healthy for them. Keeping the junk food out of the house is the best way to make sure they are not eating it. I don’t mean that an occasional treat is not ok but the key word here is “occasional.” Watch their fat intake. Pre packaged foods and fast foods are very high in fat especially Trans fats which are very dangerous. More and more companies have realized this danger and are offering Trans fat free foods. Get your child involved in physical activities. Today our children’s lives often revolve around television, video games and computers. The common negative denominator here is that they all involve just sitting. These are all excellent ways to help our children with their weight.

There is a big difference between healthy weight loss and a diet. A diet is something negative that makes children feel focused on their size rather than their health. Diet does not mean healthy it means getting thin any way possible, which is exactly the opposite of what we want our kids to believe. What you teach your kids when they are young about eating habits is the seed you plant for their future and giving our children good health is in my opinion our responsibility.

Want To Lose Weight?

May 27th, 2008

So, here we are at the beginning of the “I’m going to lose weight” or “I’m going to be healthy” season again.

In America, we sit in the most obese of all country’s, and we have the most diet foods available than any other. If we have more resources than any one else to fight this condition, then why are we so fat?

First of all, we drive everywhere! 2 blocks, we are getting in the car to go there. No one here walks anywhere any more, and if you do, people look at you strange.

In this little Idaho town we live in, our local grocery store is 6 blocks away. My husband and I regularly walk to the grocery store, or to the hardware store (8 blocks), to the park (3 blocks) or we just walk around the town (2.6 miles) just for exercise and if we need something, we stop into the stores and carry it home. People use to ask us all the time, “Oh, is your car broken? Do you need a ride?” No, we are just out walking!

My kids just think I’m mean when they say, “Mom, can I go to (a variety store)? Can you take me?”…No, it’s only a few block, you can walk!

What is the objection to walking! People like to be seen at the gym, I know ’cause I see all these fancy women paying big bucks for workout clothes and paying lots of money for memberships so they can be seen, but if your not that vain or self centered, or you just don’t have the money for all the extra stuff, try walking for the everyday stuff. Park the car in the parking lot you don’t have to pay for, get a little luggage cart, and start doing your shopping by walking, you’ll notice better deals in store windows, you’ll relieve stress and you’ll conserve gas, saving you money. The other advantage is, if you go shopping with friends, you have a lot more time to talk and develop a better relationship with them.

We need to teach our kids that walking isn’t a poor sport, it’s not something for old people in the mall…walking is natural, simple and healthy and they can do it too.

America, in this coming “Weight Loss” season, do something cheap, something easy, something environmental, something healthy….START WALKING!

Is Body Mass Index or BMI a Real Measure of Obesity or is It Flawed?

April 25th, 2008

Body Mass Index (bmi)
A Misleading measure of Obesity

Many professionals use body mass index also known as bmi as a measure of excess fat or obesity, but the system is totally flawed and misleading. So…

Don’t use body mass index, otherwise known as bmi, as a measuring stick to see if you are overweight or obese, because it’s totally misleading.

Yes if you are obese, the body mass index measurement will tell you that you are obese, there’s no doubt about that, however…

You could be only a bit overweight and the bmi tells you that you are obese.

Also…

You could be totally normal and the body mass index could tell you that you are overweight. So…

Why is bmi used?

That’s a good question!

First, it’s convenient. Anyone can take your height and weight, look on a chart and “label you” as obese or overweight.

Secondly, it allows weight loss clinics to sell a lot of memberships, and allows even non professionals to sell a lot of weight loss products.

So… bmi charts make it real easy to fool a lot of people, so it’s important you understand how it works.

What is Body Mass Index (bmi)?

Quite simply body mass index, is an index of your body mass relative to your height.

The bmi is calculated by taking your weight (in Kilograms) divided by your Height (in meters) squared. Simple isn’t it? :-)

But don’t worry, there are lots of charts and automatic calculators available online where you can use Pounds and inches and get to your bmi, and…

A body mass index of 18.5 or less is considered underweight, and normal is between 18.5 & 24.9. From 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, and a bmi of 30 or greater is considered obese, so…

Lets say that you have two people who are 5′ 6″ tall and both weigh 192 Lbs.

On the body mass index, both of their bmi’s would be “31″ and both would be considered to be “Obese”.

However…

The problem here is that “Weight” is used to make the calculation, and that’s what throws these numbers out the window, and here’s why…

One person could actually be Obese, and the other could be a very fit body builder and weight lifter who was pure muscles with less than 2% body fat!

And yet, on the BMI scale they would both be considered “Obese”

Ridiculous isn’t it?

Now these two examples are opposite extremes, but I hope you understand the point. A more normal example would be…

Lets say that you decide to join a Gym to lose weight. You work out for months, lose 45 Lbs of fat, and put on 45 Lbs of Muscles.

You have gotten much fitter, and improved your health a great deal, but when you calculate your body mass index… “You’re still Obese”

That’s when most people just give up! However…

You may even have reduced your percentage of body fat quite a bit over time, but the bmi will “Not Reveal that Success to You”

What’s wrong with that picture?

First of all, why use a measuring system which won’t even reveal to you, what little Success you are having? It’s hard enough to stay motivated on any weight loss system, without not even being aware of what little success you are having.

Please realize that…

I’m just using the “Gym Example” to make a point, because most of the exercise routines that are done in Gyms are actually very bad and inefficient for burning fat. It’s a lot of hard work, and a lot of sweating for very little results, because…

Most of the exercise routines, which people do in Gyms and on exercise equipment, burn mostly sugar and very little fat. “That’s Right”.

Oh yes you’ll build muscles, but it’s mostly sugar burning muscle mass and not fat burning muscle mass, and that’s especially bad for a woman, because…

You can actually build enough muscles that you start to look like “a Guy”, but you’ll still be fat, on the other hand, if you do the right kind of exercises like we teach in the free Slim America weight loss Project, then…

You can turn your body into a very efficient “fat burning machine”, lose all the excess fat, and still look slim and sexy.

The choice is yoursfat loss with this kind of simple system “is permanent”!

So you can forget all about body mass index or bmi, because it’s very misleading and can be very depressing, even when you are having some success.

It’s much better to use a measuring tape, because that will tell you “The Truth”

Have a Great Life!

Herb Remedies

April 15th, 2008

Herb remedies are made of natural substances that come from plants. Herbs have been valued throughout history. The Bible tells us Kings journeyed many miles to bring frankincense and myrrh as gifts for Jesus.

Indeed the Bible makes references to herbal medicine. In Ezekiel, Jesus says “the fruit of the tree is for man’s meat, and the leaves for man’s medicine.”

Many plants have been found by science to have effects upon the body. One example is the bark of the willow tree. Years ago this bark would be steeped in hot water, the same way you would make tea. This hot drink somehow brought pain relief and helped to lower fevers. As time went by, scientists found that the bark of this plant contained something called salicin. This natural substance was eventually made into acetesalicylic acid, which is now known by the more common name of “aspirin.” This tree bark based home remedy is now the world’s top selling pain relief product.

Not all herb remedies come from tree bark of course. Ginseng and Kava supplements are made from the roots of those plants. In Ginkgo Biloba products, the tree’s leaves are used. Other herb remedies are made from flowers, seeds, mushrooms, leaves, cacti, bark, etc.

Coffee is made from ground coffee “beans” which are the seeds of a tree. Coffee contains caffeine, which stimulates the body. Tea comes from the dried leaves of various plants. Tea also contains caffeine. These may be helpful when trying to stay awake and alert, and not helpful at all when trying to get a good night’s sleep.

Throughout history, herbs and plants have been believed to have medicinal properties. Today medical researchers are proving that many herbs and plants do support good health. Some herbs have even been turned into medicines.

Foxglove is one example. In the past it was believed to help chest pains. Researchers eventually found that ingredient digitalis from foxglove. Digitalis is now a medicine that is widely used by doctors for heart related treatments.

Scientists turned a mold into the medicine named Penicillin. The bark of the Peruvian cinchona tree was believed to help the body fight off malaria and medical researchers eventually used it to make quinine sulfate.

However not all herbs and plants are good for you simply because they are “natural.” The tobacco leaf, for example, is a natural herb. Cigarettes were at one time advertised on television as being good for helping soothe a cough. The truth was just the opposite and we now know that tobacco can cause
cancer.

On the other hand, some plants have falsely been labeled as being bad for you when they are actually good for you. Early settlers in America thought that if you ate tomatoes you would die from poisoning.

Scientific medical studies are the only way to prove how herbs work or do not work. Unscientific claims for or against a simple plant are absurd.

History provides some clues as to which herb remedies may help support good health. Ginkgo biloba for example may be the oldest herb known in human history. Fossils of ginkgo biloba trees have been found dating back to the Paleozoic era millions of years ago. In China, these tree leaves have been used as one of their most popular herb remedies for over five thousand years.

The Egyptians left us the Papyrus Ebers which are hieroglyphic writings about hundreds of herb remedies such as aloe vera. A Chinese herbal guide known as the Ben Cao is thought to have be recorded by Emporer Shen Nong around 2000 B.C. In India the study of Ayurveda (the science of life) also dates back to around 2000 B.C. The Greek doctor Dioscorides made a record called De Materia medica which tells the health effects of over 500 plants. Italy was where ingredients were first formulated
in standardized dosages.

The Amazon rain forest is home to many unknown plants and herbs. Today scientists hope it could be home to many new herbal supplements that could lead to new medicines.

Every year science learns more about how herbs and plants are good for your health. It is becoming more and more as the Bible quote says, “the fruit of the tree is for man’s meat, and the leaves for man’s medicine.”

Natural Remedies for ADHD and ADD: An Alternative to Prescribing Ritalin for Children

April 1st, 2008

When your child is diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, deciding on the best form of treatment can be an extremely draining and intensely personal process.

Recent headlines about dangerous side effects of commonly prescribed drugs such as Ritalin and Concerta can leave parents feeling ashamed of their decision to give their children these medications. It is important to remember that while some children who take these drugs do experience alarming side effects, many are treated effectively. But it is also important to be informed of alternatives, and to know about natural medications and ingredients that have shown to be both highly effective and safe.

In order to make the best decision about treating your child, you need to understand what the most commonly doctor-prescribed drugs are and what they do.

Stimulants (such as Ritalin, Adderall and Concerta) increase brain activity and tend to increase a child’s alertness and ability to pay attention. The most common side effects of these drugs are mood changes, headaches, irritability, insomnia and loss of appetite. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration received reports that Concerta was producing more serious side effects such as psychosis, hallucinations and suicidal thoughts among some users.

Non-Stimulants, such as Strattera, increase attention and impulse control by monitoring a brain chemical believed to affect those behaviors. Side effects similarly include moodiness, fatigue and decreased appetite.

Anti-depressants, such as Wellbutrin, relieve anxiety and regulate mood by altering brain chemical composition. These drugs are commonly prescribed to children suffering from both ADHD and depression. Side effects can include dizziness, weight loss and suicidal thoughts.

Many natural remedies for ADHD and ADD have proven to be equally effective and can be excellent alternatives to prescribing Ritalin for children as the homeopathic medications do not produce the same disturbing side effects.

When researching natural remedies as a treatment for ADHD, look for ingredients which have been shown to be the most useful. One of these is Centella Asiatica (also called Gotu Kola), a natural ingredient known to reduce anxiety levels and enhance memory and brain function. Recent studies show that it may also help increase blood flow to the brain and improve general circulation.

Another popular ingredient, Green Oats (also called Avena sativa), acts as a nerve tonic whose calming effects grow with time and consistent use.

Panax Ginseng, a Chinese herb, has been shown in studies to strengthen the immune system, reduce stress and fatigue, increase motivation, and normalize body functions.

There are many natural remedies available that focus specifically on child ADHD treatment. Every child is unique and will react uniquely to medication, so trust your instincts and give the remedy time to take effect. As always, consult a doctor if you have questions, but you may find that homeopathic medications provide your child with a safe and natural path to an ADHD symptom-free life.
