Hurricane Preparedness

March 9th, 2009

If you are about to get hit by a Hurricane are you prepared? Do you have enough plywood to board up your windows? Often the local lumber companies will be sold out. In fact if you wait till the last minute Home Depot will be out too. Do you own a portable generator? No? Get one. Do you have enough fuel to keep it powered up? Most generators can use up to 1.5 gallons per hour and thus you need spare fuel tanks as well? If you wait too long the gas stations will be closed and after the Hurricane the power may not be turned back on for up to two-weeks depending on the damage. If you are talking about a direct hit Category III or IV it is entirely possible that it will be at least that long.

So what do you really need? Well you will need water first off. Fill up your bathtubs and any containers you have before the hurricane. Figure about 15 gallons per day per person. You can get by on 6-8 gallons if you have to, but 15 comfortably. Next you need food. Remember with the power out those foods needing refrigeration will spoil in a couple of days, so you need ready to eat type foods. Perhaps freeze, as much of your water as you can, ice is always a premium after a Hurricane.

If you have babies you need to be ready with those special needs and foods. Pets are also serious issues, as they will rely on you for many things, allowing them to go hunt food for themselves could cause serious hygiene issues and bacteria from broken sewer lines and debris floating in the nearby flooded waters.

In case of cuts you will need rubbing alcohol, bandaids and a basic first aid kit. It is also smart to have mosquitoes repellant as the Mosquitoes will multiply fast in the following weeks as stagnant water assists them. Chlorine can also be used to clean water. Rubber Gloves are also a must.

Besides your portable generator you will need some extra Duracell batteries, transistor radio, lighter, extra propane for cooking and a full tank of gasoline in your car. Think on this, better safe than sorry.

Team Building: Developing A Team To Rely On

March 6th, 2009

Team building is very important when it comes to managing people. People are simply more willing to work together, when the atmosphere encourages it. For many organizations this is quite necessary for the business to run well. When everyone gets along, things just go better. They provide better service to the customer. They work together to deliver satisfaction with smiles. They also help to promote employee retention. Customers are happy, employees are happy, and the world is now a better place, right?

Team building is anything but simple. It is not something that can be done overnight. Nor is it something you can force people to do. So, how can you effectively build your team to encourage them to bond and develop working relationships that are positive? There are many things that you can do. Here are some ideas:

• Set the example yourself. As the leader of the team, it is up to you to provide a good relationship with your team players. You want them to feel comfortable with you as well as with others. Don’t favor some and don’t become too friendly either.

• You can encourage relationships to work by fostering a teamwork style. Make sure that the goals are established and that each team player is aware of them. They should know that you want a team work environment that is what you are looking for in your employees.

• Also, provide them with opportunities to get to know each other. Take the team out to dinner on you. Encourage them to talk about their families and lives so that they can bond.

When team building is successful, there are many things that can happen. Not only will the business run better, but you can foster good qualities in individuals to come out. You can have a bond of trust and reliance with your team. Team building is an exceptional quality that you should encourage in some form or another with your team.

Things to Come!

March 4th, 2009

When I went to bed last night, I had a piece of paper in my hand aiming to write some thoughts in my head, flashed, as only those unformed midnight thoughts.
It was all made up of unexpected burning words; don’t know why I thought about doing this? I don’t feel want to write, I used to type it on my PC, as if my pen has corroded.

I knew even in my half-sleep it was nonsense, meaningless, but that forcing and hammering would clear its shape.
But then when I started writing, not a word of it remains, not even a hint of its direction
Beginning to feel sleepier, I surrendered & turned off the lights, that was shortly after midnight.

I usually have dreamless sleep I wished if I would dream of anything that night.
just as soon as I closed my eyes; thoughts popped up in my head, I knew if I tried to catch them again it will be in vain.
And when I wake up in the morning I will forget all about it.
I usually have that easy sleep, but something was preventing me that day from sleep.

Light was coming through my window; I left it half open to see the moon rays falling on the curtain, it made wonderful shapes with that pale grey & silver stripes.

It is very cold, the forlorn wind scarcely breathes, I loved to close my eyes a moment and think of the land outside. a long walk; short pier … the sound of ocean, the rain drops, smelling the night breath full with grass scent … how relaxing and quiet it was.
Now I’m not remembering anything about those thoughts, just great well to go on in such way till I sleep … I only felt the morning light scorching my face I woke up it was around 6 am, closed my window to sleep for another more 2 hours preparing to wake up to go for work.I couldn’t write anything of that which was in my head that night, but it was all fine with me, although I didn’t dream!

Guide to Auto Insurance in California

March 4th, 2009

CA State Insurance Minimums

  • Bodily Injury Liability (BIL): $15,000/$30,000 Limit
  • Property Damage Liability: $5,000 Limit

*Required limits for drivers in the California Automobile Assigned Risk Plan are $10,000/$20,000/$3,000 Limits

A Tort system is followed in CA. This means that someone must always be found at fault. Responsibility for damages will be held by the person at fault and their insurance underwriter. Particulars of this system can differ by state and you should check with your local DMV office for exact rules.

California does not require it, but if you’d like greater piece of mind, you can opt to get Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury coverage on your california auto insurance policy. This insurance coverage will protect you against personal injury caused by an uninsured driver. This can be very worthwhile coverage if you end up being involved in an accident with this type of person.

The average auto insurance premium for residents in California was $950 in 2003; The national average rate was $914. Some people think the state and insurance companies fix the rates, so they never compare current rates for better rates.

Insurance companies segment their rates differently so everyone’s rate will be different with each company. You have to compare current auto insurance quotes to see if you are saving money. There are several sites available to compare insurance quotes and less epensive rates available in CA, so average Californians can get a lower rate on their auto insurance.

The most recent reduction of insurance rates occurred in 2007. 2007 had a .5% to 1% decrease in auto insurance rates from 2006. In 2009, costs are expected to slowly rise once more! Auto insurance comparison sites recognize that the only way to save is to shop. These types of insurance comparison sites use technology to let you find the best rates

Insurance rates change over the years and especially in a state like California, if you are not careful you may wind up paying too much for your insurance premiums. Looking back, the average insurance rate in 2000 was about $767; it increased almost 24% in just 3 years! Since then costs have fluctuated.

Governments Not Allowing Poker and Gambling

March 2nd, 2009

I often deride governments around the world that don’t allow online poker to be legalized, or that demonize against gambling in general. Similarly, I must also praise governments that have the good sense to allow law abiding poker players to play online and in card rooms. I was reading an interesting article online about the forthcoming Australia New Zealand Poker Tour. The person writing the article was talking about the upcoming event, what games they were going to play, and in general the Australia/New Zealand poker scene.

I in fact learned that New Zealand (not a particularly large country) has casinos in five cities across the country. So no matter where you live in New Zealand, you likely don’t have to travel all that far to play poker (unline, for example, in the United states, where one could conceivably be several hundreds of miles away froma gambling site). Even better, I learned that online poker is perfectly legal in New Zealand, and many of its citizens enjoy it.

Now, isn’t this refreshing? A country that realzies that online poker is a game of skill that is enjoyed by law abiding citizens for a little bit of luxury. And the country probably reaps the benefit from taxes by any online site that is based in New Zealand.

I always knew the country that gave us “the Lord of the Rings” movies would be a smart, sensible place to live.

Goals - The Mountain, the Mountain Bike and You

March 2nd, 2009

This is about personal goals and about the easy way to set such a goal. One of the main problems with goal-setting is not the activity to target a goal, but to select one that seems reasonable; not too easy but still serious.

Using the metaphor of climbing a mountain is useful and even better is to add something like a mountain bike. This bike adds the aspect of the tools you need in your way up to the top; the tool that supports you in achieving your goal.

As said, selecting a mountain is the easiest part in goal-setting. If you are not experienced it goes without saying that you shouldn’t target Mount Everest.

The mountain bike is essential in your journey, because here you are presented a choice of using modern technology or just the old stuff. One type of coach could just focus on adding more energy, to hit the pedal some more. But, another coach could tip you that the current bike you are planning to use will not help you getting there.
Don’t underestimate this tool thing, because innovation could just mean the difference in getting you where you want.

The last element is the toughest one and that is you. Any start is simple, but now imagine that you have reached some height, but you are still not there. And your resources are running out. So from that moment onwards is where the hard work comes in.
From that moment on, you will hear voices. When you are indeed alone it is your own voice telling you that to target this other top “which is only a bit lower than the previous set target.” “And it is just as well a pretty goal.” If you are not alone, others will tell you that you are nuts, “why would you go that far?”

But you shouldn’t listen to those voices, because they are fooling you. Concentrate on your job and on your target. This is, if you are serious. And than, you will get there.

Remembering 9-11-01

March 2nd, 2009

This morning I tried to convince my husband* that managing a household is exceptionally time consuming- times two for me as I am no domestic goddess. I could write volumes of contrite and unneeded examples and still not cover what goddesses superior to me know about mother, wife and individual. Our conversation is far from over and before today, I would have wasted too much energy trying to get him to see something he can’t, and impatiently waiting until he happens upon a moment that strikes him, as he usually does, and he says, “Oh! I get it, baby.”

Winter 2004 was also the complete death and rebirth of my life. Up until May of 2005, my life was a myriad of choices tainted with too much self-denial. It has been absolutely debilitating, embarrassing, painful, and amazing. I have been called crazy, immature, insecure, stupid and a few others I will remember later and wished I’d written. These statements would have previously permeated and debilitated my life in one or more ways; today, they have little effect.

My life, on paper, looks pretty good:

Education: B.A. Cultural Anthropology, M.S. Information Studies

Certifications: MCSE, CCNA, Cisco Certified Instructor, Certified Technical Trainer, Mat Pilates Instructor, Spinning Instructor, Resist-a-ball trainer

Occupation: Tenured Associate Professor- Computer Information Systems

Age: Almost 33

5′2″

110 pounds

Blood Pressure: 90/60

Marital Status: Engaged

Children: 17 year-old stepson

3 dogs

3 cats

Now here’s the truth:

Blah, blah, blah,

Now here’s the truth that matters:

I call Larry my husband*, because that is what I believe and feel he is. The right moment has not happened for us to marry. It will and we will. Ours is a love that is serendipitous to those who can embrace it and absurd to those who cannot, and I don’t care, I love him.

I call Jimmie my step-son, because that is what I believe and feel he is. He is an amazing child/man who has allowed me to suffer through realizing who I was at his age and who I am now. He is this enigma that brought forth the innate love and pain of motherhood that I thought I was incapable of possessing or feeling.

For seven years I have had daily physical pain that steadily grew to feel like a knife pushed up under my left shoulder blade, through my neck and out my temple. By February I was in pain and having constant muscle spasms.

After five months of hard-earned (in more ways than one) sick-leave, I decided this month that I am quitting the job that gives me that safe income, cheap health insurance, “summers and December” and, “Dude, teaching is like so easy! You only work like four hours a week.” Only good teachers know what I mean. Oh yeah, and it looks good on paper.

At the end of January 2005, I lost most of my money through Internet fraud. Not only did I lose my money, but also my ego. Ms. Computer Professor should have known better. By middle March, Larry was involved in three automobile accidents, and Jimmie one. Thankfully, they were never harmed. Two of the accidents counted against my once terrific insurance record. My credit score plummeted from 860 to 540 and a few minor issues here and there, as well as all the other possibilities of the world that we all deal with.

Now you’re startin’ to get the crazy, stupid, yadda, yadda, yadda, and the stimulus for this morning’s argument, right? How could anyone in their right mind quit their job at such a time in life and, what! What! WHAT! I’m using my retirement money to live on. They’re coming to take me away, ha, ha, hee, hee…

I quit all that good stuff on paper, all those things we knew didn’t really matter September 11, 2001, but eventually failed to recall. I quit because I love my husband, I love my step-son and now, I’m learning to love me.

Life took everything that I thought did or didn’t matter away, if only for one realized moment. When you are at rock bottom for any reason, there is available a voice, an angel, a guide, a vision, whatever you want to name it, that enables you to hold tighter to hope and you and life begin to do amazing things.

I believe no less than 95% of people can be happier, healthier and know true love. I believe there can be complete positive and complete negative, hence, the other 5%. I believe that no matter how successful I may become or hard I may fall, I will still be called crazy, stupid, immature, yadda, yadda, yadda, by some. I believe most people wish they could feel as happy and confident about something.

I know I can no longer teach to a few an incidental computer lesson, when I can teach many about the truths we all want to know. The ones you find when you lose everything, realize so much, and yearn to know more.
I know I’m now remembering what I truly felt September 11, 2001 and I’m living my life as a wife, a mother, a creator, a writer, even if that means I am crazy, stupid, immature…

Promotional Videos Can Be Brilliant for a Firm’s Turnover

March 1st, 2009

You might well know how helpful uploading your company’s Web video clip is. For a firm’s marketing manager, short format video commercials are a creditable resource that can help to capture your customers’ attention and drastically raise the overall amount of users to your organisations website. Online video clips are tremendously good in holding the target customers’ relatively short attention span. Furthermore, if codes are adopted & video sharing is promoted, professional videos can be a great way to get one-way external links. & thus positively affect your firms rankings on Google.

In actual fact, online video clips have become a useful tool for business or self endorsement. The following are a couple tips to distributing your own short format video commercials.

Firstly, you can post your Internet videos on your own site; however this would need you to make your own video hosting arrangements. Ask your online hosting solutions merchant if video downloading or video streaming functions are supported.

Video downloading is where your business visitors are required to download your short format video to their PC’s hard drive. They need to download the video to their own computers before they can play it using their computer’s video player or a downloadable video player software. There are hundreds video downloading service businesses that are reasonably priced. There is also a progressive downloading mechanism where your visitors can play the short format promotional videos whilst downloading them.

Video sharing streaming on the other hand totally does away with the requirement to download the online video clips & allows immediate playback so it presents the most convenience to your users. Obviously, getting a video hosting provider that supports video streaming can cost you a pretty penny.

And finally, the more trendy way to circulate online video clips is by posting your sites to video distribution websites that possess their very own video hosting infrastructure. These sites cost you nothing at all to join and will from time to time pay you to upload video content. They also have an immense market base & grasp; for example, YouTube receives in the region of 15 million Internet visits every month. If you are looking for a company that specialises in corporate video production in London then look no further than Vidify.
