How To Have Stronger Willpower

November 23rd, 2008

Have you ever wished you had stronger willpower? How can you make yourself stop doing things you don’t want to do? There are ways, and the first thing to do is to redefine the concept of willpower.

Self Awareness Instead Of Willpower

It’s hard to resist temptation sometimes, isn’t it? That piece of cake calls to you. What’s the simple answer to this? Don’t stand in front of the cake! Don’t go to the bar alone if you want a faithful marriage. Don’t have whiskey in the house if you don’t want to drink it. Stay away from people that lead you to trouble.

People often have this idea that willpower must mean being immune to temptation. What if true willpower is not only the ability to say no, but the wisdom to avoid temptation? Become aware of where your resistance is low, and don’t put yourself in those situations. Doesn’t that make more sense than fighting useless battles with yourself?

Other Ways To Strengthen Willpower

There will be times when you didn’t choose the situation, of course. Or at least that’s the excuse you’ll use. What can you do then? Try these tips:

1. Immediately begin to imagine the consequences of your actions. Give yourself a good scare, if you have to.

2. Substitute temptations. Quickly get a glass of your favorite juice or soda if you don’t want that beer.

3. Ask for help. If you can’t stop complaining, for example, have friends point out when you are doing it.

4. Relax. Willpower is low when you are stressed. Close your eyes and take three deep breaths.

5. Energize yourself. Willpower tends to go up and down with energy levels. Sleep well, play energetic music, move around, or start an interesting conversation.

6. Find the cause of the temptation, and deal with it. A boring job or life can lead you to all sorts of stupid ways to find “excitement.” Consider changing what you can change.

You can call it willpower, or self control, or something else. You just want to stop yourself from doing harmful things, right? Using the techniques and tips here will help.

Setting Goals - Things to Think About

November 21st, 2008

We hear a lot about the steps we should take to achieve our goals, however unless we take the first steps to realistically consider who and what we are right now - our capabilities and interests - and think logically about what we’d like to accomplish, our chances of achieving our “goal” are slim to none. Here are a few things to think about when you’re trying to decide what you’d like to do.

1. Your goals need to be your goals

Not your spouse’s or significant other’s, not your friends’, parents’, children’s, etc. - YOURS!

2. Your goals must be achievable

It’s great to stretch for them, in fact it’s desirable, but you must be able to honestly picture yourself achieving them.

3. You must be willing to put forth some extra effort

It’s not possible to achieve more by vegging out in front of the TV. It will take extra effort and sometimes extra money.

“You can’t take a trip unless you’re willing to pay the price of the ticket.”

4. You gotta really want to do it

How can you achieve something you really don’t want? If you can honestly picture yourself doing this “thing” you want to do and can approach the task of getting it done with a positive attitude, your chances for success are very good.

*Success - taking the steps to do those things you want to do!

5. Be picky about who you tell

We need positives and support to accomplish our goals. Share your thoughts and plans only with those who will back your efforts.

6. Achieving your goal must benefit everyone concerned

Think about the end result of achieving your goal. How will others be affected? Will the overall result be positive and in everyone’s best interests?

(Note: Not everyone has to like the result!)

7. Will accomplishing your goal be fun/enjoyable?

There can be some hard work between “here” and “there”. If we get satisfaction from our progress and we know we’ll feel good when we reach our goal, we’ll have a much better chance of getting it done.

(Why would we ever do anything to intentionally make our lives miserable?)

One last thing. OK, maybe a couple of last things. The two references to imaging - as in being able to “picture” yourself achieving your goal - are extremely important. The picture you create is far more powerful than any words you could ever use to describe a goal. It should be an integral part of the initial thinking and planning process. Also - spend a little time thinking about the PEMS sisters. You know what I’m talking about, right? The Physical, Emotional, Mental and Spiritual components of our life that are a part of everything we do? Include them as partners in the planning of your new life video. You may just find that one of them will turn out to be the deciding factor in whether or not you should move into the full production process.

To succeed - just do what you love to do.

Writing a Mission and Vision Statement

November 20th, 2008

Last year, I attended a seminar where the attendees were asked to define their personal mission or purpose in one sentence. Out of about a group of about three hundred people, fewer than a dozen were able to articulate a mission statement.

It’s not that living with purpose is a low priority for most of us. Research by Richard J. Leider and David Shapiro, authors of Repacking Your Bags, found that the number one deadly fear of most people is “having lived a meaningless life.”

Why, then, does writing a mission statement seem like such a daunting task?

I believe the main reason lies in the lack of practical resources. Though you can avail yourself of prolific advice about writing mission statements from management experts and from books, the Internet, and so forthmost of this information is complex and confusing. Also, most of these resources target corporations and organizations, providing little practical advice for an individual who wants to craft a personal mission statement.

When you were a child you probably learned how to start a fire by focusing sunlight through a magnifying glass. Sunlight alone could not start the fire; it had to be focused through the magnifying glass. This reflects a basic principle of solar energythough a large amount of sunlight falls on the earth, the light is diffused. For the sun to be utilized for heating, solar energy units must be designed to collect and concentrate the light.

The same principle applies to purpose. It must be focused to produce results. With no focus, there is no mechanism for establishing direction or goals. As Diana Scharf Hunt said, “Goals are dreams with deadlines.”

Committing yourself to defining your purpose is the perhaps the most important task you could ever engage in. “Discovering your purpose will put your life into crystal-clear perspective,” says Mark Victor Hansen in an Internet article “Conceptualize your Purpose.” “You will see another world, one in which you are a necessary and intricate spoke in the wheel.”

Your Personal Mission Statement

What is a mission statement? Since the focus of this article is on personal life purpose, as opposed to a corporate or organizational purpose, I’m going to simplify the process with the aim of making it easy for individuals who desire to articulate their purpose. Let’s use the following definitions:

Mission Statement: Concise statement of your life purpose.
Vision Statement: Concise statement of the unique and distinctive ways that you will accomplish your purpose.

The first place to start is your mission statement. I will use the terms “mission” and “purpose” interchangeably. Choose the term you like best.

Think of your mission statement as a general statement encompassing your reason for existencein other words, a broad statement of what you hope to accomplish. It does not include the distinctive ways that you intend to accomplish your purpose; that will be articulated in your vision statement.

Your mission statement will help you stay on course. In First Things First, Stephen Covey emphasizes the motivation and energy that result from an effective mission statement. “What we’re talking about here is not simply writing a statement of belief. We’re talking about accessing and creating an open connection with the deep energy that comes from a well-defined, thoroughly integrated sense of purpose and meaning in life.”

Before you develop your mission statement, it is important to understand what a mission statement is not. It is not a to-do list. Nor is it a statement of strategies or methods. It is not a job description. Jobs and roles change through life’s different seasons; purpose embodies a broad vision that encompasses all your roles.

You may not see a clear picture right now, and that’s fine. Relax. Don’t sweat it. Enjoy the process.

In other words, your mission statement is not written in stone. You can and should revisit it periodically. Most likely you will revise and fine-tune it time and again. Don’t be concerned about whether it is precisely accurate. Pray and ask God to lead you in this endeavour.

Take time out from your busy schedule to prayerfully reflect on your personal mission, as you understand it at this point on your journey. Look at the big picture, and ask yourself questions like, Who am I? Why am I here? What are my desires and dreams? What is my mission, or purpose?

Defining your purpose should be a stimulating and motivating exercise. It should stir enthusiasm and excitement.

Many people feel that purpose must relate to a vision of achieving something of great magnitude or something that affects a nation or even the entire world. But purpose does not necessarily involve grandiose ideas.

I like what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Everyone has the power for greatnessnot for fame but greatness, because greatness is determined by service.”

Defining your passions within a larger context will help you articulate your purpose.

Successful people not only have a clear vision of what they want to do, but why. The why is as important as the what, for it is the why that fuels vision and keeps you motivated when you face setbacks.

Understanding why you want to do something will help you define your purpose. For example, perhaps you believe you are called to leadership in the business arena. Ask yourself, Why do I want to do this?

Think about how you can use your gifts to seek others. Always seek to understand the big picture - the purpose for your passions and talents.

Now get out some paper or your Palm Pilate or laptop or whatever communications gadget you like best, and begin drafting your mission statement. I’ll say it againdo not obsess about getting it perfect. I wrote and rewrote my mission statement many times. And who knows, I may refine it again in the future.

Keep revising it until you can define it in one clear, concise sentence.

Here is my mission statement: “To inspire and equip women to reach their divine potential.”

Notice that this statement does not include the specifics of how I will accomplish my mission. It says nothing about the unique and distinctive strategies I will employ for achieving my purpose.

Your Vision Statement

Now that you have defined your mission statement in one sentence, you are ready to take the next step and craft your vision statement. The vision statement adds the all-important how. It defines the distinctive and specific ways that you will accomplish your mission.

As George Barna says in The Power of Vision, “While the mission statement is philosophic in nature, the vision statement is strategic in nature.” While mission relates to general approaches, “vision relates to specific actions.”

Your vision statement propels your mission to specific strategies. Specifying the primary activities you will pursue to accomplish your purpose, it reflects your unique passions, talents, and skills.

You should be able to define your vision statement in one concise paragraph. The first sentence of this paragraph is your mission statement. The next one or two sentences specify how you will accomplish your mission.

Your vision statement will evolve over time, reflecting your character development and the acquisition of more skills and experience.

At one time, my vision statement read as follows: “To inspire and equip women to reach their divine potential. This will be accomplished by writing articles and books and by speaking at conferences and seminars.”

As time went on, I revised my vision statement to the following: “To inspire and equip women to reach their divine potential. This will be accomplished by writing articles, columns, books, and e-books; by publishing an online women’s magazine; and by speaking at conferences and seminars.”

Notice that the first sentence (my mission statement) did not change. The next sentence, which encompasses how I will achieve my mission, continues evolving.

Thousands of other women may have the same mission statement as mine but have different vision statements reflecting their unique gifts and callings.

For example, one woman might reach the same mission as mine through counselling. Her vision statement might read something like this: “To inspire and equip women to reach their divine potential. This will be accomplished through personal counselling.”

Another woman might have a vision statement like this: “To inspire and equip women to reach their divine potential. This will be accomplished by coaching women in leadership and business management skills.”

Can you see how the vision statement encompasses uniqueness and specificity? It is the vision statementnot the mission statementthat reflects your unique gifts and strategies.

Your vision statement serves as a compass to keep things going in the right direction. It helps you measure your progress, set goals, establish priorities, and know when to use one of the most important words in your vocabulary: No.

One of my favourite movies is Apollo 13. I never fail to be inspired by the courage and resourcefulness of the astronauts amid unimaginable pressure and seemingly impossible odds. On top of a litany of other crippling technical problems, the astronauts were faced with the reality that their oxygen could run out, they could be poisoned by carbon dioxide accumulations, or they could freeze to death. Even if they managed to return to the earth’s atmosphere, they had to enter at precisely the right angle.

If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll recall there were many decisions and actions that contributed to their successful landing. One of those actions was ensuring they kept the earth in sight at all times, for they had lost their navigational equipment.

In the same way, your vision statement will keep you moving in the right direction. It will help you stay focused on the big picture, even when facing emotional upheaval, discouragement, obstacles, and all the other distractions that life throws at you.

Mission and vision statements provide focus to your purpose. As Henry David Thoreau said, “In the long run men only hit what they aim for.”

Tarot Readers - Signs to Look for when Choosing a Tarot Reader

November 20th, 2008

Things have come a long way since my youth when readings were frequently done by mysterious old women in secluded booths masked by beaded curtains. Divination of all forms and Tarot Card reading in particular has attracted its quota of dubious readers. But how can you tell?

Many readers engage in their work with a genuine desire to help clients sort out life issues and offer the insight to help them do so. Some are in it purely to make money and I think that to a certain extent this has made the public skeptical. There is a need to be careful.

With so many media now advertising readings of various kinds, how do you tell where you are likely to get good information and what is likely to be a rip off? Well, for one thing, you should look out for personal contact. Usually individual readers who set up their own web sites are more reliable. If a site has been around for some time, if the reader is experienced and is willing to answer any enquiry you may have, then the signs are good.

Naturally you want to be happy that your credit card details are secure. Internet sites where secure payment systems are used are a good bet. Paypal and KAGI are examples of well established payment agencies. A good website is likely to use these types of secure systems, to protect its clients. It pays to be more cautious about sites which don’t use these types of systems and which take your card details themselves. A bona fide web site will also outline clearly what type of reading you get for your money and how much that reading is.

Areas where caution is needed are website or newspaper services where there is no clearly identifiable person dealing with the readings. If it’s organised by a virtually anonymous “company”, what are you getting? If there is no interaction with a real person, be cautious. Will the information you receive be genuine or something printed from a long list of “options” by a computer? If you are asked to send in your mobile phone number to receive your reading in that way, be very cautious. How much are the charges? Is this a “one-off” reading or will you be sent regular readings and how much will they be? If you are going to speak to a psychic on the phone, how much are the per minute charges? How much will they add up to if you speak for an hour, which is not uncommon? Often these kinds of operations are run by people who teach their readers to keep clients talking so they will spend more and more money. Ethical readings involve a one off payment for a well described service.

To avoid problems it is best to select a reading type from a site which offers a range of options. If you want detailed information about your life over the coming year, then you would be looking at a reading which is quite substantial and for which you would pay more. Simpler questions such as, “Will I find a lover?” can be covered in smaller layouts.

The issue is that you should choose a reading and know the cost beforehand. Sometimes clients think if they pay more they will hear more. This is another misconception about the nature of divination and it can be encouraged by readers whose focus is on making more money. There is usually a limit to how much can be seen about an issue at any time by a reader. So, if you choose an appropriate reading, it should cover the issue you are looking at adequately and there should be no need to have more readings on that topic. Indeed it can be unproductive to ask the same question again and again.

Provided you bear these points in mind, then the Internet offers a wide range of readers, from different traditions, who are able to help you in your quest to understand your life better. That is what a reading should be. It should not be a lip trembling moment of consulting about your “Fate” but a genuine enquiry into the possibilities around you at the time. Bearing all this in mind, may your readings be fruitful!

Annual Forecast for 2006 : Year of the Yang Red Fire Dog - General Analysis

November 19th, 2008

ANNUAL FORECAST FOR 2006 : YEAR OF YANG RED FIRE DOG BASED ON CHINESE ASTROLOGY

(Year of Yang Red Fire Dog : 29.01.2006 to 17.02.2007)

GENERAL ANALYSIS :

In Chinese Hsia Calender, 2006 is the 4703rd year and is called the Bing-Xu : the Year of the Dog. It is also the third year of the new Fengshui Land Luck Period 8. The Calendar is based on the Five Elements of Nature. They are also known as the Pancha Pranas or the Pancha Bhoodhas : Earth (Bhoomi), Water (Jala), Fire (Agni), Metal (Air, Vaayu), and Wood (Ether, Sky, Spirit, Space, Aakash). The Year of the Dog symbolises the Fire and Earth. That is Yang Red Fire riding over the Earth. Hence the name Year of the Yang Red Fire Dog. In the Productive Cycle of Fengshui, Fire gives birth to Earth. So the basic elemental relationship is positive and quite strong.

2006 is, in general, a supportive year with a sensible climate of justice, relief, harmony and peace prevailing over the globe, compared to the last few years. Even though global turmoil and instability will continue, the scale of civil wars and international conflicts will come down. Initiatives of the prevoius years will lead to peace talks which in turn could result in amicable settlements. Even the visciousness in the political atmosphere will mellow down and become more polite and optimistic. On the other hand, many countries will see new claims for seperate provinces or states based on certain cultural or ethnic origins. The primary issues for most of the countries will continue to revolve around maintenance of law and order, internal security, defence, border security and control of terrorists. International disputes of land and properties will also continue to thrive.

There will be a huge positive surge in solving issues relating to global interests : global warming problem, environmental pollution, earth conservation, saving extinct species, tackling epidemics, resource sharing, etc. National & international co-operation will become the trend of the year. 2006 would probably concieve the notion of collective mankind marching towards an inspiring New World Order.

Spiritual and religious following will gather much greater momentum and an yearning to find metaphysical answers will increase. More and more NewAge Ways will be revealed and will gain popularity. Discussions and forums on esoteric subjects will open up. Paranormal happenings will increase drastically. Hidden dangers and unexplainable events will initiate genuine interests in several mystic subjects. Many new Cults will surface.

There will be quite a few windfalls and prosperity not seen for quite some time now. Bitter experience will give way to optimism and self-confidence and when supported by planned and sustained efforts, will yield excellent success. Moderate to fast economic recovery will be seen and a general improvement in living conditions may be witnessed. A sincere attempt for urban renewal will be started. The underprivileged will get to have a lot of attention. 2006 will see a lot more marriages happen than the previous year - it will also see a lot less break-offs and divorces. Faith and commitments will be rewarded whereas deviousness and treachery will be punished. Marital bliss will in general, be quietly satisfying. Handsome cashflows will also bring in avoidable expenses. To save, accumulate and invest in assets will become more difficult.

For a change, as a general rule, career will flourish, commerce will expand and pay rise will be satisfactory. There could be a fall in unemployment figures, in many countries. Stock and financial markets will skyrocket (and invariably slump) and many will make their lifetime fortunes. However, the second half of the year could prove to be the undoing for too many. Industries identified with fire element : airlines, entertainment, electricity, energy, stock market and financial markets will see a lot of investments and massive expansions. All industries related to the wood element, like paper, magazines, books, fashion, textiles and fancy furniture will thrive. Construction industry, real estates and interior designing will flourish. On the other hand in areas like insurance, hotels, mining, chemicals, heavy metal industries, etc. there could actually be decline in business itself, with cut throat competition ruining everything. Industries linked to the water element like shipping, drinks and communications will manage to maintain the last year’s tempo. The electronic and petroleum industries will expand greatly. The TV and movie industries will see quite a lot of troubles by way of legal disputes, lawsuits, high interest loans, untimely deaths of personalities and violent clashes. Educational and constitutional reforms will be started in many countries. Fields catering to the special needs of women, new-born babies, education, religions and esoterism will do very good business. But whatever maybe the industry, the year will be filled with gossips, arguments, disputes and struggles. There will be many cases where frustrations will end up in lawsuits and imprisonments.

Earthquakes of awesome proportions will occur. Fire based disasters like volcanic eruptions, nuclear disasters and big fire explosions will take place. Typhoons, very heavy rains, floods, building collapses, bridge cracks, landslides, mining accidents, plagues, etc. will happen in frightening frequency. Accidents in mass transport systems will drastically increase. Tourist disasters and refugee crisis will continue to increase. There will be many more cases of children getting hurt in mass, maybe in places like water theme parks, kindergarden schools, etc.

Drug and herbal abuse will lead to serious health problems. Food poisoning due to residual pesticides in fruits, vegetables and flowers will increase to a worrying level. Serious health problems related to blood, heart and kidneys are indicated. Stomach pain, shoulder pain and problems pertaining to digestion, abdomen and intestines will be very common. 2006 could see a lot more cases of severe cancer, eye and respiratory infections. Chances of Bird flu breaking out once again is quite high.

The Manglik Factor in the Horoscope

November 18th, 2008

Mars holds a very important planet in our horoscopes. It is the planet of action and our capacity to project emotion - its nature is that of a brave warrior, one who is also ruthless. A correct balance of Martian energy is the most desirable in all lives - but unfortunately, only a lucky few possess this dynamic balance. Mars is the planet of emotional excitability, which can become violence. Generally speaking, Venus is the planet of emotion sensitivity, which can become refinement while Mars represents the malefic side of our emotions.

On the positive side, a strong Mars is necessary to give us the energy, independence,
will and self-confidence to carry out our endeavors. Without this we would have no real
interest, passion or motivation to carry out anything to an end and accomplish its objective. On the negative side, the same aggression brings about competition, argument and conflict - which, if unchecked can lead to domination, violence and injury.

Mars indicates premature death; as with loss of partner, particularly so when Mars is afflicted by “Kuja Dosha”. This affliction of Mars in a chart commonly makes the horoscope to be known as a Manglik horoscope. It is caused by placement of Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, 12th house of a natal chart. There are of course conditions when this affliction of “Kuja Dosha” is reduced to some extent.
These are:

  • Mars in 1st House is in Aries
  • Mars in 4th House is in Scorpio
  • Mars in the 7th House is in Capricorn or

    Pisces

  • Mars in the 8th House is in Cancer
  • Mars in the 12th House is in Sagittarius

The very obvious and only means to cancellation of “Kuja Dosha” or malefic effect of a Manglik horoscope is that the person with such a horoscope marries another with a similar affliction. Recourse to divinity, especially to Lord Hanumaan is said to be effective armour against malefic effect of “Kuja Dosha”.

Our FREE report analyses the status of Mars in a horoscope with respect to its position in the Horoscope, its special status (namely Exalted, Own House or Debilitated) and the existence of generally malefic aspects / conjunction of Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Listening to and Understanding Your Feelings

November 17th, 2008

I think that listening to your feelings is one of the most powerful and under-rated skills for empowerment and self development. Our feelings are part of the language of our inner guidance. Sometimes pesky, sometimes hot, sometimes fun, sometimes funny, sometimes exhilarating feelings speak volumes in a single impulse.

The other day, I was somewhat surprised by a comment a relatively new client made to me. She relayed to me a conversation she had with another VP in her company about her work with me. She told him, “Jeanie is teaching me to manage my feelings.” I didn’t correct her on that perception because this was an expression of her perception and her experiences. Eventually, though, I’ll express alternative ways for her to understand her relationship with her feelings and she’ll hear me when she’s ready to hear me.

Since that conversation, I’ve reflected several times on my own view of what I’m regularly teaching (or trying to teach) about feelings. So, here is a list of ways I regularly express how I relate to using feelings.

  • Listen to your feelings
  • Honor your feelings
  • Recognize your feelings
  • Know your feelings as you move through your day
  • Ask your feelings
  • Use your feelings
  • Understand your feelings
  • Ask your feelings to speak to you
  • Let your feelings guide you
  • Manage yourself after recognizing your feelings

In fact, the list could go on. I talk a lot about feelings, mainly because feelings are almost totally misunderstood, perhaps especially in the work place. The prevailing paradigm about feelings includes beliefs that one person is responsible for another person’s feelings, that some feelings are wrong, that feelings must be explained or expressed to others.

The only way I can make “manage” a concept that works for me is expressed in the last one in the list, to manage yourself after recognizing your feelings. I think feelings are a powerful way to manage yourself. That wealth of information in your feelings tells you in a nanosecond whether you are moving toward your heart’s desires or away from your heart’s desires.

So, today, ask yourself many times: How do I feel? How do I feel? How do I feel? And listen to the answer.

What’s The Point of Meditating?

November 15th, 2008

What are you likely to gain from meditating?

Simple:

• It improves the power of your concentration.

• Calms you down.

• And enables you to know what you want out of life and how to achieve it.

In our experience, we each have two sides of us, two YOUS if you prefer.

ONE YOU: wants to be successful and has the ability of giving you all the help and encouragement you need.

THE OTHER YOU: wants you to be an all so ran. Mediocre and that one will also give you all the help and encouragement you need to be mediocre.

The question is:
Which of these have you chosen to work with?
Which of these have you activated.
Which of these have you given credence and credibility to.

Ask yourself:

When did you last say you would do something but never did?

When did you say that you volunteer for a task only to find that whilst you were procrastinating another person took the opportunity and made it?

When was the last time you broke a promise to your colleague, your partner or your children?

If you can identify with all or some of these behaviours then you have chosen to live with the You that is less powerful. As a result will find it difficult to reach the goals you have set for yourself in this life.

Success comes from the ability to concentrate on your strengths.

How do you do this?

Simple just give yourself five minutes a day. Just five minutes every morning to be with yourself and concentrate on the successful you.

If you really want to change your life give yourself five minutes every day to:

focus on your strengths.
focus on successful thoughts.
focus on fulfilling your commitments.
focus on encouraging others.
focus on delivering what you promised.

If you can’t squeeze five minutes into your schedule spend five minutes with yourself on the bus, train or in the traffic jam. Just give yourself five minutes.

When you start you will not be able to concentrate and will find your mind wandering all over the place. Don’t worry about this. It’s natural. It’s like learning to walk. You couldn’t do that immediately. It just takes practice.

The more you practice. The more you devote five minutes of your time to yourself, the easier it will become.

It’s like everything else in this world. You get a return of what you give. The more you give yourself the higher the return.

That’s the point of meditating. You improve your concentration skills, you gradually become at one with yourself and the world. And you know what you want out of life and how to achieve it.

Good Luck.
